Underwater content was dropped after its reception in Tri and 3G. Monster Hunter 4 ( 3DS: Japan 2013) - The fourth mainline entry in the series, this time only appearing in Japan on the 3DS.Had cross play between the 3DS and WiiU versions. Monster Hunter 3G / Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate ( 3DS: 2011 JP / 2013 NA, WiiU: 2012 JP / 2013 NA) - Another expansion of Monster Hunter Tri from the Wii, this time retaining the underwater combat and adding a new flagship monster, the Brachydios. It also removed all the underwater combat from the game, and re-did the maps that had water sections. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd ( PSP: 2010 JP, PS3: 2011 JP) - A weird entry that brought Monster Hunter Tri to PSP.Supported online play for the first time since the PS2 titles. It also was pretty light on content for a Monster Hunter game, focusing instead on new monsters and areas.
It is one of only 2 games in the series that had underwater combat.
Monster Hunter Tri ( Wii: 2009 JP / 2010 NA) - A direct home-console sequel to Monster Hunter Dos (2) and originally announced for the PS3, but cancelled. This was by far the largest Monster Hunter so far in terms of content. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G / Monster Hunter Freedom Unite ( PSP: 2008 JP / 2009 NA) - This is the expanded version of Monster Hunter 2, adding G-Rank quests and new monsters the same way Monster Hunter G did to Monster Hunter. The games are based on the content from Monster Hunter 2 and bring the game to handheld consoles. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd / Monster Hunter Freedom 2 ( PSP: 2007 JP / 2007 NA) - Again, Freedom 2 is just the Western name for Portable 2nd. Monster Hunter 2 ( PS2: 2006 JP) - Only released in Japan because of the small following in the west, this entry added day/night cycles. Freedom is the Western equivalent of Portable, and is identical in content.
It was based on the content from Monster Hunter G.
Monster Hunter Portable / Monster Hunter Freedom ( PSP: 2005 JP / 2006 NA) - The first release of Monster Hunter on handhelds. It's an enhanced version of the original with new monsters and weapons, and was the first entry to add "G Rank" quests (above High Rank). Monster Hunter G ( PS2: 2005 JP) - A Japan exclusive game for the PS2. Monster Hunter ( PS2: 2004 JP / 2004 NA) - The first game in the franchise, released both in Japan and the West. I think you're asking about the chronology of the releases, and not the actual story/lore of the game world (which I know basically nothing about), is that right? Assuming it is, here's a rough idea of how it shakes down:
